The official hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th. It’s that time of year that creates a bit of dread for those of us living on the east coast from the Keys to Maine, and on the west coast from the Everglades to Texas. Be alert to Hurricane advisories, which are typically reflected in two types:
Hurricane Watch
This advisory is issued and covers a specified area and duration. Your Property Management Team will keep you advised and offer specific preparation guidelines based on the individuality of the property type and location.
- Prepare a business continuation plan
- Notify employees of pending shut down/evacuation plan
- Prepare to secure office areas
- Prepare for evacuation
Hurricane Warning
If the wind speed increases to 74 mph and landfall is anticipated within twenty-four hours, a hurricane warning will be issued by the National Hurricane Center. Your Property Management Team will stay informed and keep you advised of evacuations, based on the recommendations made by Municipal and State authorities. Basic guidelines are as follows:
- In case of flooding, Tenants located in any first floor area, should move items from the floor in case of flooding.
- Disconnect all electrical and electronic equipment. Move the equipment away from windows and exterior walls, and wrap in plastic.
- Identify, protect, and backup all vital records; and remove from property if possible.
- Remove all loose pictures and other items from wall.
- Remove all personal items.
- Close blinds/shades on all exterior windows.
- Close all exterior office doors, particularly those with windows.
- Turn off all lights.
- Close and lock all entry doors.
Upon issuing an evacuation notice, your Property Management Team will provide telephone numbers for Tenants to obtain updated building information for the duration of the hurricane. It is the goal of the NAIHallmark Partners Property Management Team to cooperate with the appropriate local and regional government authorities, and to keep all of our Tenants and Building Owners informed of the correct preparation and procedures in the event of a hurricane in the North Florida area.
